HER SINK // HAIR LOSS
Hair loss happens. Yes, even to women.
It can be traumatic as a lot of women see their hair as their “crown.” The reasons for hair loss can run the gamut, which is why it’s key to find out the root cause early. The sooner treatment begins, the better the results.
- Trauma (AKA: telogen effluvium).
Two to three months after a stressful event, we can suddenly lose up to ⅔ of our hair. Think having a baby, car accident, loss of a loved one, etc. These are examples of things that can happen to trigger hair loss. Hair goes through a resting and shedding phase, yet it can reverse itself after a few months. - Genetics (AKA: androgenetic alopecia).
Women can inherit their propensity to lose their hair. Typically, the blame falls on the mother’s side of the family, but genetic hair loss can also be inherited from the father’s side. Hair strengthening treatments can help combat the severity. - Auto-immune (AKA: alopecia areata).
Our own bodies can attack hair cells causing hair loss. Extreme cases include hair loss over the entire body, not just on our heads. Early diagnosis is important for the body to respond to treatment. - Behavioral (AKA: traction alopecia).
Styling hair into tight braids and pony tails can initiate hair loss. Hair can break leading to risk of permanent damage down the road. - Side-effects (AKA: central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia).
Harsh chemicals and styling products can do more harm than good. You run the risk of hair breakage, scarring and permanent scalp damage. Choose gentle and mild hair care when possible to protect your crown.
