Oily skin is a common complaint particularly among teenagers and young adults. Some people have combination skin with an area of oil skin in the T zone (affecting their forehead and nose) and an area of dry skin on the cheeks.
Oily skin is caused by release of healthy oils into the skin. It can be improved with proper skin care and education on the right soaps and products.
People with oily skin can be prone to getting acne and razor bumps. These problems could be prevented with proper oily skin care but should be addressed with a dermatologist as they may require medication.
If you have oily skin you should avoid applying anything to your face that does not say “oil free” or “non-comedogenic”. This includes sunscreens, soaps, make-up and moisturizers. If a product says that it is for “sensitive skin”, it indicates that it is created for people who are prone to red or itchy skin, it does not mean that it is ok to use for oily skin.
Simple skincare that works.
Skin care regimen:
- Wash your face with an oil free or non-comedogenic soap at least once daily.
- If you have some dry areas on your skin, moisturize with Cerave oil free facial moisturizer. Sometimes people with oily skin develop dryness after starting medications for conditions caused by the oiliness (acne for example).
